Base Oils, Oil Additives and Specialty Fluids

Base oils, oil additives, and specialty fluids are specialty and proprietary base oils and fluids related to lubricants, coolants, thermal oils, greases, metal working fluids and other application- specific fluids. They have a unique composition or tailored compounding suited for specialized applications. Base oils, oil additives, and special fluids can cling to surfaces better than other industrial oils and deliver both lubrication and protection. Base oil is the oil used in oil formulas before additives are introduced. Base oils, oil additives, and specialty fluids are used to provide protection for four-wheel drive steering knuckles, spring shackles, and other components operating in high-load, low-speed conditions.

There are many types of base oils, oil additives, and specialty fluids. A fuel oil additive is good for conserving fuel oil, dispersing sludge, and reducing pollution. Oil in coolant is a sign that a head gasket is broken and requires repair before further damage occurs. Industrial oil includes compressor, turbine or bearing oil, hydraulic oil, metalworking oil, or refrigeration oil. Base oils, oil additives, and specialty fluids, such as polymer food-grade greases provide ultra-premium lubrication for high levels of protection in food-industry equipment. In combustion systems, thermal energy is transferred from the hot exhaust gases to a heat transfer fluid that can be water, air, thermal oil, or an antifreeze solution. A lubricant additive is a substance that is added to a lubricant to give it desirable properties, such as corrosion inhibition.

Base oils, oil additives, and specialty fluids can stay in place, lubricate, and prevent rust. A motor oil additive is an additive used in oil for automotive vehicles, such as cars or trucks. A metal working fluid is a fluid that is used in metalworking, which can include water-based chemicals, and semi-chemical fluids, synthetics and soluble oils, straight oils, and EDM oils. Base oils, oil additives, and specialty fluids for metal working can provide protection and performance in shock-loading applications which can rupture the oil film of conventional greases and lead to damaging metal-to-metal contact. A coolant additive is an additive used in some oils, such as sodium (Na) and boron (B).
