Roving and yarn are fibers twisted into a feedstock for weaving cloth or reinforcing composites. Yarns are long, continuous lengths of interlocked fibers, suitable for use in the production of textiles, sewing, crocheting, knitting, weaving, and rope making. Yarns can be made from any number of synthetic or natural fibers. Examples of natural fibers include wool, angora, cotton, silk, linen, bamboo, hemp, and soy. Commercial yarns are often made from synthetic fibers or a combination of natural and synthetic fibers. Very thin yarns are referred to as threads. Roving is a condensed sliver, which has been drafted, twisted, and wound on a roving bobbin. Specialized roving and yarn types are also available.

Roving and yarn is manufactured by either a spinning or air texturizing (taslanizing) process. In spun yarn production, roving is an intermediate state between slivers and yarns. Wool is the fiber produced as the outer coat of sheep. The amount of crimp corresponds to the fineness of the wool fibers. A fine wool like merino may have up to a hundred crimps per inch, while coarser wools like karakul may have as few as one to two crimps per inch. Wool yarn is typically used as weft yarns with a cotton warp. Thread roving and textiles are thin fibers spun together for sewing. Natural fibers that can be used for roving and yarn include silk, linen, and cotton.
