Roofing materials are used in the construction of roofs for industrial and commercial buildings. Depending on the application and environment, common roofing materials include sheet metal, asphalt, tile, and slate. Roofing equipment has changed over the years bringing a modern, durable, and cost reduction advantage. Choosing the correct roofing supply material is important not only to contend with rough weather, but also to keep energy costs down, and to improve and accentuate the overall appeal of a building. Metal roofing can bring a home beauty, durability, and reduced energy costs. Metal roofing is more durable than asphalt tiles, lasting between 30-60 years with a lesser degree of disintegration and decomposition. Roofing shingles and roofing tiles were originally made of wood but now they are typically made of bitumen soaked paper covered with aggregate (asphalt shingle). Steel roofing or slate roofing delivers a combination of extreme durability with design versatility and is maintenance free. Other types of roofing materials are commonly available.
Roofing from metal can often be applied on top of an existing roof without removing the old roof. It is fairly lightweight and comes in many new colors. Steel roofing or slate roofing lasts a long time, is durable, very attractive, resistant to ice and snow, and does not age with exposure to sunlight or moisture. Steel roofing or slate roofing does not shrink, peel, or crack. Roofing shingles are generally thicker than historic hand split shingles and are usually left "undressed" with a rough, corrugated surface. Shingles are laid from the bottom edge of the roof up, each row overlapping the previous one by about half its length. Roofing made from slate is applied in a similar pattern, and is sometimes called 'slate shingle’. Roofing products such as tiles, slates, and steel roofing are the strongest roofing materials available. Steel roofing weighs less than traditional roofing material, extremely fire retardant, and is corrosive resistant. While a steel roof can be more expensive in the short term than other types of roofs, it saves money over time because it will rarely need to be replaced. A steel roof can save in energy costs by deflecting the sun's heat, reducing the temperature of an attic during the summer months, and help to hold heat in a home during the winter months. Roofing materials are designed and manufactured to meet most industry specifications.
