Residential lighting is designed to illuminate residential environments such as kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms, and living rooms. Products include bath and vanity lights, breakfast and kitchen lights, chandeliers, fans and fan accessories, floor and table lamps, outdoor and landscape lighting, tiffany lamps, and wall and ceiling lights. Some residential lighting suppliers divide products into categories such as task lighting, ambient lighting, accent lighting, layered lighting, and dimming and lighting controls. Others designated lighting products as traditional, transitional, or contemporary. Pendant lighting, solar lighting, desk lamps, bathroom fixtures, and LED lighting are also types of residential lighting. Regardless of the terminology used, lighting type and energy efficiency are important specifications to consider.

Task lighting is a high-intensity form of residential lighting that provides light for tasks such as food preparation and cooking. The amount of light which reaches the task is measured in footcandles. Ambient lighting is produced by portable, floor-mounted lamps or wall-mounted lights such as sconces. Typically, high levels of ambient light are used in closets and laundry rooms while lower levels are used in other parts of a residence. Accent lighting is a type of residential lighting that is designed to focus attention on an object such as an architectural design or artwork. Layered lighting places multiple forms of lighting in room such as a kitchen. Dimming and lighting controls can be used with most form of residential lighting. For example, dimmers and dimmer switches are often used in dining rooms and dining areas.
