Fire escapes are exterior emergency exit paths from a building. They act as a method of escape during fires or other emergencies that make interior stairwells inaccessible. Fire escapes are strategically located on the sides of multi-story buildings. Access to fire escapes may be provided by a fire exit door, however sometimes the only way is through a window. Fire access doors are often equipped with an alarm, which sounds an alert to prevent unwanted entry.
Fire escapes consist of a number of horizontal platforms connected by ladders of stairs. Platforms are often made from steel grating, and are found on each level of a building. Fire escapes usually have railings on each level. However, since fire escapes are built for emergency use only, these railings often don’t meet the same standards as they would in other contexts.
