Commercial lighting is designed to illuminate commercial and industrial environments. There are many different types of products. Examples include incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, high intensity discharge (HID), low pressure sodium (LPS), light emitting diode (LED), and neon. Light fittings, lighting controls, and lighting requirements are also important specifications to consider. Commercial lighting suppliers may describe their products as architectural lighting or decorative lighting; outdoor lighting or security lighting; and factory lighting or warehouse lighting. Flood lights, high intensity lighting, office lighting, and solar lighting are commonly available.

Commercial lighting may use incandescent light, halogen light, or various forms of fluorescent light. Incandescent lighting is relatively inexpensive, but is also the least efficient form of electric lighting. Halogen lights have a longer life than incandescent lights, but are not as efficient as fluorescents. There are three main types of fluorescent lamps in commercial lighting: halophosphor, triphosphor, and compact fluorescent. Halophosphor or standard fluorescent lighting uses 70% less electricity than incandescent globes. Triphosphor tubes are even more efficient, and provide better color rendering. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) have electronic ballasts and starters. CFLs use the same bayonet or screw bases as incandescent globes, but are up to five times more efficient than incandescents.
