Semifinished shapes and stock materials are used in manufacturing of nearly anything in the industrial sector. Stock material suppliers prepare and provide standard fabricated materials in a variety of shapes including sheets, plates, rods, bar stock, and tubes. There are several types of stock shapes. Examples include a rod, bar, tee, channel, and half-round. Stock shapes are a processed form of a raw material that can be used to produce a variety of finished goods. Semifinished material can be cut, turned, planed, milled, drilled, stamped, and welded easily on woodworking or metalworking machines. Semifinished sheets of plastic fabrics are available that can cater to industrial needs. Stock building materials used in steel industries are mainly in the form of rods and bars. Semifinished shapes and stock materials can be machined without difficulty on a lathe, and a high-quality finish can be attained. Mass-produced articles can be manufactured economically when high speed machines customary in light-metal working are used. Semi finished shapes and stock materials include plastic fabric, fill, rods, tube, sheets, etc. Other semi finished shapes and stock materials types are also commonly available.
Semifinished shapes and stock materials are available in standard sizes. Flatbar stock of dimensions (0.1250 in x 0.5000 in x 144 in) to (2.00 in x 8.00 in x 144 in) and rodstock of dimensions (0.1250 in x 0.1875 in x 144) to (2.00 in x 15.00 in x 144 in) are commercially available. Fabricated stock should be wrought, extruded, corrosion resistant, and heat resistant. At lower cutting speeds, cooling of the fabricated stock is not required, but at the higher cutting speed range, water cooling or the use of a cutting soluble oil as a coolant is essential. In all cases care must be taken to avoid heat buildup in the machining operation so that the workpiece does not smear the cutting edges. In milling and turning, the feed should not be too fast, and the depth of cut should be greater than 0.3 mm. Semifinished material may either be cut by machine on band saws or circular saws used for wood, or by hand with sharp wood or metal saws with wide-set teeth. The process of production of most reinforced plastic carbon fiber sheet starts with the fabrication of semi-finished sheet material, followed by thermoforming, and finally joining techniques. Semifinished shapes and stock materials of high tensile strength are designed using alloys and manufactured to meet most industry specifications.
