Phenolic, melamine, and formaldehyde resins are thermosetting adhesives that form strong bonds and have good resistance to high temperatures. Thermoset resins require heat or heat and pressure to cure and to form a secure bond. Phenolic or phenol formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde, and melamine resin adhesives are all considered types of phenolic, melamine, and formaldehyde resins.
Phenolic, melamine, and formaldehyde resins include phenolic resin adhesives which are made from chemicals of both the phenol group and formaldehyde and are generally the most durable resins. Phenolic and formaldehyde resins have been around a long time and are fairly low in cost. Phenolic resins are available in liquid, powder, and film form. Phenolic, melamine, and formaldehyde resins also include special phenolic resins that harden at moderate temperatures when mixed with suitable accelerators. Phenol-formaldehyde, resorcinol-formaldehyde, resol, and novalac resins are all types of phenol formaldehyde resin. Formaldehyde resin is commonly used in the manufacturing of coated abrasives or sanding media or can also be used to make insulation.
