Covers, Tarps and Wraps

Industrial covers and industrial tarps are used to protect machinery, pallets, and building materials from exposure to weather, sunlight, and other environmental conditions. Covers can consist of rigid metal sheet, a flexible textile or a semi-flexible plastic. There are many different types of products. Poly covers and poly tarps are lightweight, moisture-resistant, and relatively inexpensive. They consist of cross-woven strands of polyethylene (PE), a biodegradable thermoplastic. Products with more cross-weaves per square inch provide greater strength and durability. Canvas covers and tarps are made of closely-woven hemp, flax, or cotton cloth. They are heavier than polyethylene products, but provide better wind resistance. Vinyl covers and tarps are made of vinyl-coated polyester and often coated with flame-retardant polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Metal sheet and foil are used to form covers, wraps, shields and saddles. Mesh covers and tarps can be made of polyethylene, canvas, metal or vinyl. These industrial covers and industrial tarps allow the partial passage of wind and light, making them suitable for enclosures, site barriers, awnings, and construction sites.

Selecting industrial covers and industrial tarps requires an analysis of specifications and features. Most products include metal or plastic grommets, eyelets that are used to help secure tie-downs. The edge hem may be reinforced with a sewn-in rope and rounded corners. Poly covers and poly tarps differ in terms of size, gauge, weight per roll, and thickness. Available colors include black, blue, brown, clear, green, silver, and white. Canvas covers and canvas tarps come in 10, 12, or 17 ounce (oz.) designations. Products that resist or retard water, mildew, and the spread of flames are chemically-treated and weight up to 20% more. Green, white, and tan are common colors for canvas covers and tarps. Vinyl covers and vinyl tarps may provide flame and/or water resistance. Coating material and size are important considerations. For example, neoprene-coated products are recommended for road vehicles. Mesh tarps are available in a variety of colors and are sold by the case. Like other types of industrial covers and industrial tarps, they can be treated to resist damage from ultraviolet (UV) light.

Industrial covers and industrial tarps are used in a variety of applications and industries. Some products are used as hay tarps, lumber tarps, boat tarps, or truck tarps. Others serve as snow fences or tent canopies. Industrial covers and industrial tarps are also used in construction projects to cover bridges, building, and water towers. These products provide superior wind-resistance and are designed to be tied down for relatively long periods of times. Some suppliers provide accessories such as ropes, tarp tie-downs, replacement grommets, and anti-mildew treatments.
